Interview with local entrepreneur Juliet Huang 

Juliet, is this your first business? and how did you get into it? 

Yes, this is my first business. I started baking home-cooked British-style pies for my husband who is from the UK, and for friends, because they were missing home-cooked food. I did a lot of research – you can’t just make it up…but it’s a fun process. I managed to source all the basic ingredients in China, and I hand select everything from local farmers to ensure the quality.  

Do you have a signature pie? what is your best seller, your husband’s favourite? your personal favourite? (or are these all the same pie?!) 

My signature pie is the steak and Guinness pie, but the cheese & onion, meat and potato and chicken and mushroom pies are probably the most popular.  

Do you have any vegetarian options? 

Yes, we have many vegetarian choices on the menu including veggie shepherds’ pies, spinach ravioli, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin pie, soups and fruit pies. 

Are all your customers in Hangzhou? 

Initially yes, but now I send out my food packages all over China…I’ve even got a customer in India!  

How has your business been affected during this surreal lockdown period? 

For a little while it was difficult to get the locally sourced ingredients in time. But that soon passed and now I’m as busy as ever! I still feel very touched that people are paying me to make food for them! 

Any advice to budding entrepreneurs who are looking to go into business? 

Very simple: follow your passion! If you love your job, you’ll never work another day again!
